Want to give your business a web presence, but don’t know where to start? Perhaps you have priced web solutions and you don’t have the budget for a full-fledged web site. For the month of August, Amicron is offering a free web page to businesses and other organizations. Even if you have a web site already, find out how you can get your web page linked to our free web links gallery. All you need to get started, is to request document W008010 or give us a call and we’ll fill you in on the details. Web Readers: click here for more information.

Q: I use Microsoft Excel and I’m trying to paste a hyperlink from one location in the spreadsheet to another using Edit > Paste As Hyperlink. Sometimes it works great, other times the option is grayed out. What am I doing wrong? > Terry, Orchard Park

A: Terry, when you’re pasting a hyperlink to a location in another spreadsheet, you have to make sure you save the spreadsheet first, otherwise, Excel doesn’t know where to make the hyperlink to. The Paste As Hyperlink option will be grayed out if you open a new spreadsheet and try to copy and paste a hyperlink before saving the document.

WE DO INTERNET

We’re still surprising some of our long-term customers by the fact that yes, we are an Internet Service Provider (ISP) now. Just last week I got a call from a long-time client who asked me what ISP we recommend. Of course, I said “Amicron”. He’s been a customer of ours for several years, and didn’t know this. We do everything from basic dialup service to web design and hosting. If you’re interested in getting your business hooked up to the Internet, call and request document W008011 and we’ll let you know all of the different options that are available to you. Web Readers: you can click here for more information.

Q: What Web search engine does Amicron recommend, and is there a difference between the different engines? > Janine, Cheektowaga

A: To answer your second question first, “yes, there is a difference.” Different search engines prioritize different criteria. Some are better for personal searches, while others may turn up better business results. Personally, we like www.search.com which is a search engine that searches other search engines. Then you have Yahoo! which really isn’t a search engine, it’s a directory. Confused? Don’t be. We’ve put together a special report titled Everything You Need To Know About The Internet that you can call and request for free by asking for document W008012.

Request document W008013 for our special report Ten Steps To PC Maintenance which will outline several important things you should do with your computer on a regular basis to keep it running in good shape. We’ll also share with you some of the things you should not do, like turning off your computer with a power strip, or turning off your PC without a proper Shut Down.

600 MHz PC FOR $999

We’ve got a hot deal for the summer, if you’re in the market for a new computer system. Check this out: AMD Athlon 600 MHz processor (out-performs an Intel Pentium III 600), 64 MB of RAM, 10 GB hard drive, 8 MB AGP video card, 48X CD-ROM drive, wavetable sound card, speakers, 56k v.90 modem, keyboard, mouse, Windows 98 Second Edition and a 15” SVGA monitor for just $999. You can’t tell us that’s not a great deal! Of course, we custom-build to order, so if you want to add some memory, or perhaps you need a larger hard drive, we can accommodate you. For more information, please request document W008014. You can also call and speak with Chris Mackert, our sales manager, for a custom quotation. Web Readers: you can click here for more information, or buy online!

Q: I want to be able to dial in to my Windows NT file server at work. I know you recommend pcAnywhere for remote access, but someone told me that Windows NT comes with it’s own dial-up software. What do you suggest? > William, Buffalo

A: Yes, William, Windows NT Server does come with a program called Dial-Up Server which allows you to attach to the server using a modem just as if you were attaching over a LAN. The problem is that depending on what you’re doing, your connection may be too slow for Dial-Up Networking. The options are too many to discuss here. If you’re interested in remotely connecting to your server, and would like to know what options are available, please request document W008015. We’ll explain the options.

NEED MORE SPACE?

Running out of room on your computer? Need more hard drive space? We can add a 10 GB hard drive to most systems for as little as $119 including installation. For complete details and pricing, please request document W008016.

Q: I was trying to rename a Word document on my server and it said that there was a “sharing violation,” but I’m certain I didn’t have it open. What could the problem have been? >Jo Marie, Amherst

A: It could be a number of things. There could be someone else on your network that had the file open. It could have been open, but due to a record-locking problem (either with Word or your server) the system thinks it’s still open. The best thing to do is shut down your system and down your server. The problem should go away when you restart. If that doesn’t fix it, your file may be corrupt. Delete it and restore from your backup tape. If that doesn’t help, call us!

MAXIMIZE YOUR NETWORK

OK, so you’ve networked your computers together. Are you maximizing your network? There are a lot of things you can do with a network that most businesses don’t realize. For starters, you can share an Internet connection on one computer across your entire network. You can share one modem to fax documents, or connect to banking services. You can backup your important files to different machines on your network for redundancy. Want to learn more? Request document W008020 and we’ll let you in on our secrets.
